Some of the more common eye diseases treated in our office includes:
Cataract is an eye disease that progresses slowly, but can lead to permanent and harmful effects on the eye. Cataract occurs when the crystalline lens in the eye begins to get cloudy. The crystalline lens in a normal eye is nearly transparent and changes shape to focus on objects at varying distances. Early on cataracts can cause near-sightedness (myopia), but as it progresses can cause vision loss. If treatment of this eye disease doesn’t occur it can potentially cause blindness. People having normal vision all of their life are still likely to see the changes of the eye with age and can still get cataracts. Effects from the cloudening of the crystalline lens are experienced by many people upon reaching 40 years of age. Because of this cataract is an eye disease that is typically is found in older patients. Comprehensive eye examinations are a good way to determine if you have cataracts and if you experience any of these symptoms you should contact your optometrist immediately. If you are diagnosed with cataracts which affect your vision we will typically recommend cataract surgery. Although our office doesn’t directly perform cataract surgery we will co-manage your eye disease with a cataract surgery expert.
Glaucoma is common eye disease which can be hereditary. Glaucoma is really a group of eye diseases where the optic nerve at the back of the eye is slowly destroyed. Damage from this eye disease in many cases occurs because of increased pressure in the eye but can be caused by other problems. Some other issues that can cause the eye disease called glaucoma include: a poor supply of blood to the optic nerve fibers, a structural weakness of the nerve or a health problem of the nerve fibers. Typically peripheral vision is the first vision loss that occurs in those with this eye disease. Many factors influence whether a person will get glaucoma, the main ones being: a family history of the eye disease, being of African American descent and being over the age of 40. Due to the fact that the optic nerve is gradually being destroyed and there aren’t any real symptoms, many people don’t even realize what is happening and might think their loss of vision is normal. If routine eye exams are performed on individuals the eye disease can be found before it gets to severe. Although glaucoma cannot be cured, it can be treated if detected in the diseases early stages. The longer an individual goes without treating this eye disease the higher their chance is to have permanent vision loss. A medication that lowers eye pressure is normally prescribed to treat glaucoma. Eye drops and medications are typically the first method used to treat this eye disease, however if needed laser treatments and eye surgery can be performed on advanced stages.
*This is not a complete list of all the eye diseases treated in our office; they are just the more common eye diseases.
The above eye diseases can be found during routine thorough eye examinations. The best chance for proper treatment of these eye diseases is to find them early on before permanent damage is done. Contact your optometrist for an eye exam to determine if you are at risk of getting an eye disease or if you already have an eye disease to obtain proper treatment.
